Wichita State University (WSU)

Wichita, Kansas, USA

Wichita State University began as Fairmount College, a Congregational institution, in 1895. In 1926, by a vote of the citizens of Wichita, the college became the Municipal University of Wichita, the first municipal university west of the Mississippi River. It was in the year 1964 that the university adopted its current name. WSU has affiliation from the Kansas Board of Regents. The institution has sporting affiliation from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

The university’s beautiful 330-acre main campus is a supportive, rapidly expanding learn-work-live-play environment, where students gain knowledge and credentials to prepare for fulfilling lives and careers. The main campus is situated in North Fairmount on a hilltop overlooking downtown Wichita. It features administrative offices, academic buildings, recreational spaces, athletic facilities, and student residences. The Rhatigan Student Center in the middle of the campus is the social hub of student life at the university. Other than this, the university also hosts classes at two other satellite campuses in Maize and Derby.

The National Institute for Aviation Research (NIAR) at Wichita State University is the largest university-based aviation research and development institution in the United States with more than 600,000 square feet of laboratory space. Established in 1985, NIAR offers research, development, testing, certification and training services in the areas of Additive Manufacturing, Advanced Coatings, Aerodynamics, Aging Aircraft, Ballistic and Impact Dynamics, CAD/CAM. It is also to the National Center for Advanced Materials Performance and the FAA’s Center of Excellence for Composites and Advanced Materials.

WSU has three libraries with Ablah Library being the central one. These libraries connect students and faculty to the information, technology, and other resources essential to learning and research at WSU. The university libraries hold over a million printed volumes, 70,000 journal subscriptions, and over 130 electronic database resources for research, learning, and teaching. The university has several residence halls on the campus offering accommodation to students. Shocker Hall is the largest residence hall that houses over 800 students, a coffee shop, and a 400-seat dining hall. Other on-campus facilities include parking, free Wi-Fi, student support, postal, and health care services.

The academic structure of the university has six colleges, two schools, and one institute. The university offers over 120 undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral degree programs. WSU has study-abroad connections with leading institutions that facilitate student swaps over campuses, countries, and cultures for a semester or a whole academic year. Besides, the university provides internships opportunities for students to acquire the essential knowledge and skills under industry professionals. WSU’s approximately 16,000 students come from every state in the U.S. and more than 115 other countries. About eight in 10 students are from Kansas, representing virtually every county in the state. The university has more than 550 full-time faculty, with more than 85 percent of the faculty have earned the highest degree in their field. The average class size at WSU averages about 20 students. 90 percent of classes have 50 students or fewer.

The university has an extensive list of alumni who are highly successful in their respective fields. Frank and Dan Carney (Pizza Hut’s co-founders), William LeGault (actor), Walter W. Orebaugh (foreign service officer), Michael McClure (playwright, lyricist, and novelist), and Karla Burns (actress) are the few distinguished alumni of WSU.
